Watertower- landmark of the city Genthin
The 48 metres high, octagonal tower was built in 1934/1935 as a part of the central water supply of the town Genthin. The tower has about 225 steps and has a diameter of 11 metres. Since 13, May 2004, it has been a remote watchtower in preventive fire protection. It has a thermal imaging camera, which is located at the top of the tower and has a range of 10-15 kilometres. The clinker masonry was cantilevered at the top of the tower to accommodate the 7.80 metre-high water tank, with a capacity of 400.000 litres. The artistic design was done by Genthin´s sculptor Bernd Schmitt (1902-1950). He designed eight figures and each of them has a height of 3.20 metres. Today, however, we can only find four of these sculptures on the building: The engineer, the worker, the farmer and the woman. The soldier, the Reichsarbeitsdienstmann as well as the SA-and SS-man were removed after WWII. The tower served as a control and storage unit for the old waterwork of Genthin, which was put out of service together with the Watertower on 3, April 1995.
